Dominant Opal
| Dominant Opal is another factor that has a myriad of effects and expressions. One characteristic of Dominant Opal when it is on Blue is that the tail bar is lightened. This can range from slightly lighter (washed-out look) to a White tail bar. | ||
These three birds are all Dominant Opal on Blue Bar. Notice the range of Bar coloration from darker, rust colored bars like the bird in the center pic to pure White Bars like the other two pics. Left and middle pictures courtesy of David Strait |

Opal Check Roller A very nice expression of Opal on Blue Check. |
Recessive Red Opal This bird is actually a Barred bird that Recessive Red is masking. The Opal is so strong that the White Bars show through and give the rest of the bird a Pink color. Picture courtesy of Outhouse Loft |

Recessive red Dominant Opal This bird is pure for Spread. The Opal has given the bird a "washed out" appearance. Picture courtesy of Outhouse Loft |

| T-Patter Blue Opal German DC Trumpeter Notice how it looks similar to some Bronze birds. The lighter tail bar is the distinguishing feature of this Opal. Picture courtesy of Arthur Lofts |
T-Pattern Silver Opal Check German DC Trumpeter This bird shows a distinct, lighter tail bar which distinguishes it from Spread, or Dun Opal. Picture courtesy of Arthur Lofts |

![]() Dominant Opal on Blue Bar These are often referred to as White Bars. Dominant Opals mated to Dominant Opals create a semi-lethal gene in which most of the young, Homozygous cock birds will die very young if they hatch at all. However, from a mating like this, it seems that the two birds will "bleach out" bars and checks, making Whiter Bars and Checks. |
Indigo Opal Roller Even with the darker, characteristic colored Indigo head, the Dominant Opal lightens the rest of the bird. |

![]() Dominant Opal hen Not really sure what the Opal is with here. The bird is a hen and is out of a Dominant Opal Blue Bar cock split for Brown and a Yellow T-Pattern Check Splash hen. The cock could be carrying other factors as well. Picture courtesy of Steve Caesar |
Indigo Opal Check Roller hen Notice the darker effect the Indigo has on this bird in combination with the Opal. The Opal lightens the Indigo and the Indigo Darkens the Opal to create a beautiful medium shade here. |

![]() Dominant Opal Bar Tippler This is a great example picture and case of how to determine the color of a bird. Justin sent me this picture thinking it was Blue bar with some Bronzing. However, notice the lack of a tail bar, or at least the lightening of a tail bar. This indicates Dominant Opal. Blue birds with simple bronzing will show the normal black tail bar.
